A weekend of dance

It's our last weekend of shows and we're going out dancing.

Friday, September 12 @ 8:00pm // India Jazz Suites: Fastest Feet in Rhythm

Kathak and tap dance meet and battle on the dance floor.

Saturday, September 13 @ 8:00pm // Rosanna Gamson, WIFE, Sheetal Gandhi

Modern dance from three of L.A.'s leading lady choreographers.

Around the corner...Brazilian Hip Hop @ the RedCat in DTLA.

If you need a dose of culture, need a concert to write up on (ahem...students doing concert reports *cough cough*), or just want to watch something cool and nearby, come to the REDCAT this week to watch Grupo de Rua a nine-member team regenerate Rio streets scenes.

Your jaw will drop when you see them krump, pop, and breakdance! I bet you'll wanna try the moves when you get home but be sure to strech out beforehand. We want nothing to do with injuries from you doing windmills in your living room.

Watch them tonight through Saturday, 8:30pm @ the RedCat (Walt Disney Concert Hall).

pic of the day #4: modern beijing dance co

During our 20th season (YES, we've been here all this time in the same place giving you free concerts), we brought over a fresh, innovative, newly- established, international dance company called the Beijing LDTX Modern Dance Company ,the LDTX standing for Lei Dong tian Xia which translates to Rumbles Under Heaven. The company prides itself on fostering young dancers and choreographers and set itself all the more apart by being "...China's first professional dance company founded independently from government."

Not too shabby, huh?

The Rewind: El Colegio del Cuerpo>>>Noon performance

Despite the sweltering heat and the smokey air, the 16 dancers of El Colegio del Cuerpo performed at noon today and used the entire space of CalPlaza. They worked their way from the Spiral Court by MOCA, danced on the sculpture between the Omni Hotel and the plaza, even implemented the escalator into the dance works and ultimately ended up in the water by our mainstage.

Check out some photos from earlier this afternoon...

Join for the evening performances tonight at 8pm and tomorrow (Saturday, Aug 29, 8pm).

El Colegio del Cuerpo: Beyond Modern Dance

Grand Performances' mission to create greater awareness and understanding is proud to bring to Los Angeles, El Colegio del Cuerpo (College of the Body) a unique dance company directly from Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. On the surface with polished, breathtaking and thought provoking dance works, they may seems like a pedigree of swaying beautiful bodies creating unforgettable imagery but there's more than meets the eye.

El Colegio Del Cuerpo since 1997 is an educational and artistic center that strives to enrich lives of young people and children from the most impoverished areas of Cartagena through the expression of dance. They have programs for artistic development (choreography, dance, stage production, teaching) that are outlet alternatives offering them opportunity through the arts. The company of 16 dancers that will perform on our stage is an elite core group derived from El Colegio del Cuerpo. The company is one if the inventive South American modern dance companies working today with a respected history of creating fascinating choreographies while developing dancers.

We hope that you can join us this weekend to witness with your own eyes the power of the arts.

To see a glimpse, check out their photo gallery from their website.
